The New Monsters

The swamp thing was over-rated,
its dim gaze lacked ferocity
or threat
in celluloid.
It crawled from the ooze and settled back in
like a couch potato with a snarl and a beer
watching sunday p.m. football,
completely harmless if you stay out of his line of sight.

We’ve learned to make our monsters bigger and brighter
and more like our ambitions.
They claw their way to the top.
They keep the damsel in distress
and swat back the swat team.
They eat everything that isn’t nailed down,
and we pass them the salt.
