first grade

first grade says it all
not grade one
some fixed cardinality
not even perched on the bottom
rung, ready to make the climb
not perched at all, she’s on the move
counted to one hundred and nine
in the back seat
me biting my tongue when she got confused
at thirty-seven and started over
with the matter-of-fact doggedness
of whoever it was had to roll
the stone up the hill
that stone better watch out
she’s not stopping
for anything

Kathryn, I really like that ending. Becoming aware of knowledge and how to practice it seems to be the most important kind of momentum anyone can experience. Thanks for sharing,
