Two Short Poems

    Shelter

Sorrow is sturdy
like the two-by-four:
the daily ritual of facing up,
nailing one board to the next,
framing a door or a window,
making a wall here or there,
building a shell big enough
to hold a life.

    Chit Chat

Joking, he
evaded my question,
slid past the
uninterested
seriousness in my tone,
without
even
pretending
to cry.

  1. Simone Says:

Carroll, I really like the ending of Chit Chat, partly because it carries such an emotional image in contrast to the lack of emotional involvement suggested in the title – crying versus chit chat. I also think the word “pretending” strengthens and deepens the poem.
